VINEGAR VALENTINES
aka PENNY DREADFULS
these snarky insult Valentines were cheaply made
printed on one side on thin paper.

history notes vinegar Valentines were given back as far as the Victorian era.

it is said these Valentines would
sometimes incite arguments and fistfights!
it was not uncommon to send
 Vinegar Valentines ANONYMOUSLY!
 originally costing a penny each,
 by the late 1940s
Vinegar Valentines cost a nickle a piece

ANYONE and EVERYONE was targeted by these rude, sarcastic Valentines!
from an unrequited love to teachers, alcoholics, poor, rich,
pretty, ugly, smart, stupid, cheaters, loyal "hen pecked" lovers,  borrowers, lenders and nearly
every occupation, physical or character description you could imagine!
I've even seen vinegar Valentines from the Civil War Era which were mocking the SECESSIONISTS and UNION SOLDIERS! (1860s)

MILLIONS of Vinegar Valentines were sold
in the 19th and 20th Centuries.

 until around the 1840s
the RECEIVER not only had to suffer the insult,
but also had to pay
 the postage for their Valentine!

OUCH!
